Maybe, the greatest advantage of living abroad in an underdeveloped country is the freedom for a pharmacy to sell you the drugs you need at affordable prices.

The goal of a pharmacy in 85 percent of the countries is to solve you health problems. And not to create a way to extract the most amount of money from you because you became sick.

A pharmacy (commonly the chemist in Australia, New Zealand and the UK; or drugstore in North America; retail pharmacy in industry terminology; or Apothecary, historically) is the place where most pharmacists practice the profession of pharmacy

Pharmacy Defined:
Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs.

The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes.

An establishment in which pharmacy (in the first sense) is practiced is called a pharmacy, chemist's or drug store. In the United States and Canada, drug stores commonly sell not only medicines, but also miscellaneous items such as candy (sweets), cosmetics, and magazines, as well as light refreshments or groceries.

The word pharmacy is derived from its root word pharma which was a term used since the 15th–17th centuries. In addition to pharma responsibilities, the pharma offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery. The pharma (as it was referred to) often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines. The pharmas also used many other herbs not listed.

In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of the pharma may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method

Andy.... I have looked into it and am desperately in need of an answer which could decide if I move there or not. In your video you mentioned morfina which is Spanish for mophine. I have found out you can get about anything from the pharmacist, even types of speed but you cannot get any strong narcotic pain relievers there. They have so much problems with heroin addicts and drug cartels that the strongest pain reliever you can get is codeine or Darvon. These will not cut the pain management needed for deteriorating backs or other severe chronic pain problems.

I am hoping there are some ex-pats who have chronic pain problems and how they have dealt with them and with what... They actually use methadone a lot for chronic pain management and this would work for me also but is it available in Guatemala? You would think so for people coming off of heroin...

But please, if you know about chronic pain mgnt in Central America could you let me know how they deal with this problem? Thanks.... David
